Keep A Healthy Routine
While you were in treatment, your days were often consistent and had a set routine. When you return to your regular life, the empty space can be daunting. Boredom can lead to relapse and unhealthy habits, so it is important to fill your free time appropriately. Focus on working out, eating healthy, and creating a regular sleep pattern to start. These healthy habits will have you feeling better and help keep you from turning back to drugs. Fill in the rest of your time to fill the void left behind by your addiction with hobbies like meditation, journaling, playing an instrument, or painting.
Avoid People & Places That Are Drug Triggers
Of all of the tips for relapse prevention to follow, this may be the most important. Recovery is a time for a new beginning. The surest way to sabotage this new beginning is to fall back into bad habits. Avoid the people you used to do drugs with as well as the places where you would regularly get high or drunk. Putting yourself in a bad situation surrounded by drug triggers is only setting yourself up for failure.
Continue Your Programming
Although your addiction outpatient program may be over, it doesn’t mean the recovery process is over. One of the best ways to stay sober is to continue to attend other meetings, therapies, and programs. There are plenty of support groups out there that you can join. Not only will it help keep you on track but also your peers can help keep you accountable.
Lean On Your Support System
There will be plenty of tough days in recovery, so it is important that you have a good support system. Whether this is peers from your treatment program or your closest friends, you need people that you can talk to openly and honestly. Also, the more support you have, the less likely you are to relapse.
