Tips to Stay Sober This Summer
It’s summertime and the livin’s easy. Right? Well – not necessarily, at least not for those of us struggling with addiction. With summer comes holidays, parties, and other types of celebrations that involve being surrounded by alcohol and drugs. For people going through recovery, even the thought of drinking alcohol can open a can of worms. The temptations are strong this time of year, so it’s important to remember how far you’ve come and how much you don’t want to go back. Below are some thoughts from our IOP addiction center to help you stay sober this summer.
Tips for Staying Sober Over Summer
Replace harmful and addictive behaviors with healthier habits. You can have a sober summer when you:
1. Stay focused on your goals.
When you remain aware of what you want out of this life and understand your sobriety goals, you’re less likely to revert back to your old ways. Remember how far you’ve come each and every day!
2. Stay away from old faces and old places.
One of the things you learn in recovery is to surround yourself with like-minded people, who want sobriety as much as you do. Old places and old faces can be triggering, so stick with the people and the places that keep you in your sober, right state of mind.
3. Practice self-care.
Taking care of yourself is especially vital in the summertime. If you feel like you need to take a step back and regroup, by all means, feel free to do so! Self-care looks different for everybody. Some people prefer to clean, others prefer to go for a long bike ride. Put your phone down and focus on your mental health for a moment.
4. Just say NO!
If you’re put in the situation where you have to decide between grabbing a drink and saying, “absolutely not,” try to remember how strong-willed you were in the past, and how easy it should be to just say no. This circles back to being aware of what you want out of your life and staying focused on your sobriety goals.
